Brisbane have closed the door on annoying speculation they are chasing a halfback by re-signing Peter Wallace until 2014.
The club, which has been forced to deny any interest in off-contract Melbourne Storm half Cooper Cronk, broke news of Wallace’s new deal to guests at their season launch in Brisbane on Friday night.
At least three clubs had sounded out Wallace as his contract talks with Brisbane dragged on.
However Broncos football operations manager Andrew Gee said the club had taken time to make sure the offer to Wallace was best deal they could put on the table.
“We’ve said here all along we want to keep everyone here and Wal’s been very patient,” said Gee.
“There were a few things we needed to know, including where the (salary) cap was going and once we got that we put the best offer to him we possibly could.
“Wal’s always indicated to us that he loves the joint and he wanted to stay.
“We were always confident he would stay and it’s good to know he’ll be around in his position for a few more years yet.”
Gee said one of the good things about Wallace was you knew what you were going to get every week.
“He’s a great person to have around the place, he’s a great club man and very low maintenance,” said the former Broncos prop who clinched the deal on Thursday.
“He plays with his heart and while the young guys in the team can fluctuate, you know with Wal that’s not going to happen.”
Wallace, who will take on more play-making responsibility following Darren Lockyer’s retirement, said he was very happy to have his latest contract locked away: “I have really found a home here and I am looking forward to the future.”
