Upset Reynolds waits on leg scans in NRL

NSW hopeful Adam Reynolds will nervously wait on scans to determine the extent of a leg injury that is likely to rule him out of a State of Origin recall.

Speculation was rife on Saturday that Reynolds was set to reclaim his Blues jumper when coach Brad Fittler names his game-one team on Sunday evening.

However his dreams may have since been dashed after the South Sydney star left ANZ Stadium on crutches following their cruisy win over the Wests Tigers.

Reynolds was the third Blues playmaker to go down in what was a horror 24 hours for NSW selectors on Saturday.

Less than a day after both Luke Keary (concussion) and Mitchell Pearce (groin) were ruled out of contention, Reynolds’ left leg was crushed under a teammate.

Host broadcaster Fox Sports suggested a worst case scenario for Reynolds may be a fractured fibula that could take up two months’ recovery time.

However Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett said it was too early post-game to discuss the severity of Reynolds’ injury.

“Lower leg injury, they’re not sure what it is at the moment. Obviously between the calf area somewhere around there, it might be a little fracture,” Bennett said.

“Maybe just an impact, so they’re not going to know any more until they have a look at the scans. It’s not obvious at the moment.”

With Reynolds, Keary and Pearce all but out of the running, Fittler may be forced to stick with out-of-form incumbents James Maloney and Nathan Cleary.

Rabbitohs pivot Cody Walker, who leads the league in tries, is another option.

South Sydney and NSW rake Damien Cook admitted Reynolds was left a shattered man in the sheds after the match.

“He looks a bit upset. He doesn’t know the full term of what the injury is at the moment, no one does,” Cook said post-game.

“But he’s someone who’s been playing some really good footy and a big reason why we’re where we are at the moment.

“We can pray that he gets the best result possible for him.”

State of Origin I will be played at Suncorp Stadium on June 5.
