Tuivasa-Sheck eyes Kiwi World Cup spot

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck had a small taste of life as an international rugby league player last month and his eyes are firmly set on a place at the World Cup with New Zealand.

The Sydney Roosters winger turned 20 just 10 days ago but is already a fixture in the high-flying NRL side’s starting line-up, with his dancing feet and electric pace making him one of the most exciting youngsters in the game.

Although he didn’t play against Australia in last month’s Test in Canberra, Tuivasa-Sheck was called into an extended squad by Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney for the experience.

“It was really good, I was called up after the Bulldogs game and, when Steve spoke to me, he told me I deserved to be there,” the likeable winger said.

“That gave me a real buzz and the chance to hang out with some of the big boys.

“It is my goal to go to the World Cup, having now seen the Anzac Test and what it’s like.

“It would be a dream to be able to line up in that first game.”

Tuivasa-Sheck is part of an all-Kiwi right edge for the Roosters with Shaun Kenny-Dowall inside him at centre and Sonny Bill Williams on the right-edge of the scrum.

The dual international has been magnificent since returning to league after five years playing rugby and the young wide-man said playing outside the NRL offloading king has been a huge learning experience.

“You have to be alive when he’s got the ball,” he said.

“I do heaps of practice at training with Sonny, but it’s very different in a game,” Tuivasa-Sheck said.

“His ability to fire those short and long passes is incredible and you have to be aware and ready for them.

“If you’re not, you can look pretty stupid.”
