Geoff Toovey is set to be the next NRL coach to secure his future.

Manly are expected to confirm a new deal as soon as next week, keeping Toovey at Brookvale until the end of the 2016 season as they aim to go one step better than last year’s grand final appearance.

It comes after Michael Maguire re-signed with South Sydney until the end of 2017 on Tuesday and Canterbury’s Des Hasler agreed last week to remain at Belmore over the same time frame.

“That announcement is not far away,” said Manly general manager David Perry on Wednesday.

“In principle Geoff is not going anywhere. It is just finalising the details so that announcement will come shortly.”

Toovey has slotted comfortably into the coaching hot seat at Brookvale since the acrimonious departure of Hasler at the end of 2011, maintaining the Sea Eagles’ reputation as perennial finalists.

But Toovey’s retention, and that of Hasler and Maguire, is bad news for some opposition NRL clubs given the unknown futures of several of the competition’s clipboard holders.

St George Illawarra’s Steve Price, Wests Tigers’ Mick Potter and Brisbane’s Anthony Griffin are three coaches under intense pressure to get their sides to perform this year or face the axe.

The problem for clubs if they do axe their coaches is the dwindling pool of topline coach talent available.

Toovey said he was looking forward to continuing his successful tenure with Manly.

“We have more or less come to some terms but we are not quite ready to announce anything yet,” he said.

“I am happy here and the club is happy to have me and I’m sure we will announce something shortly.
