Losing 5kg during a horror bout of tonsillitis that hospitalised him for three nights has not stopped Gold Coast’s Matt White returning this weekend for the NRL clash with the Warriors.
The recovering prop was named by the Titans for Saturday night’s game at Skilled Park along with Luke Bailey, William Zillman and Beau Champion.
Titans’ coach John Cartwright said there was still a question mark over Bailey (ribs), Zillman (hamstring) and Champion (ankle).
And he will also be sweating on the availability of State of Origin stars Nate Myles (Queensland) and Greg Bird (NSW) after Wednesday night’s series decider at Suncorp Stadium.
But White has been given the green light despite the prop still working on restoring his 116kg frame for what looms as a bruising clash.
“I had tonsillitis and a cyst on the back of my throat,” White said.
“I had three nights in hospital – it wasn’t too much fun.”
After living on a diet of jelly and ice cream while hospitalised, White said he was pleased to see some of his weight return.
“I’m just getting into training now to put a bit of weight back on. I’ve put a few (kilograms) back on already which has been good.”
White admitted he faced a tough return after witnessing the Warriors’ impressive 35-18 dismantling of an Origin-depleted North Queensland last weekend.
“They’re always tough – a big physical pack. But we’ve got a home game, so hopefully we can get a win,” he said.
The 10th-placed Titans (6-9 record) hope to welcome back Bailey after a month out with a rib injury.
He will wear a specially-designed chest guard if passed fit.
Zillman, Champion and White all missed the Titans’ last-start loss to the Dragons.
