Gold Coast scored a spirited 14-10 win over Brisbane at Skilled Park on Friday night, aided by rugby league’s first eight-point try in two years.

Veteran prop Luke Bailey recovered from an accidental knee midway through the first half to score the first eight-point try since Sydney Roosters’ centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall against Manly in round 25 of the 2010 season.

Brisbane fullback Josh Hoffman was punished for striking Bailey in the face when attempting to punch the ball from his hands.

Bailey jumped to his feet keen to let Hoffman know he didn’t appreciate the hit as players ran in from both sides.

Referee Jared Maxwell conferred with video referee Paul Simpkins before awarding the eight-pointer in the 62nd minute to break a 6-6 halftime deadlock.

The win snapped Brisbane’s run of six straight wins over Gold Coast since 2009 and delighted the crowd of 20,067, the Titans’ biggest of the year.

It could prove a costly night for the Broncos with their State of Origin forward Ben Te’o and fullback Hoffman both placed on report and several players appearing to suffer injuries.

Referee Allan Shortfall put Te’o on report for a high swinging arm on Bailey in the 60th minute.

Bailey, who copped an accidental knee from Brisbane halfback Peter Wallace midway through the opening half, was outstanding in the second 40 minutes.

Te’o crossed wide out for a try in the final minute of the game and appeared to appeal to the referee for an eight-pointer.

Wallace missed the conversion.

The win keeps Gold Coast in touch with the top eight and puts Brisbane at risk of dropping out of the top four if South Sydney and Cronulla win their weekend games.
