Titans to announce new coach on Thursday

Garth Brennan is expected to be unveiled as Gold Coast’s new NRL coach on Thursday morning after the club called a press conference at their Parkwood base.

The Titans, who have been without a full-time mentor since they sacked Neil Henry in August, will address the media through chief executive Graham Annesley at 11.30AEDT.

Their new coach will also be in attendance.

Brennan is expected to have beaten out Brisbane assistant Jason Demetriou for the role after he met with the club on Monday, while sacked South Sydney coach Michael Maguire was also a contender.

The Penrith NSW coach is highly regarded in rugby league circles and is credited with bringing through the Panthers current batch of young stars.

However former Penrith player and one-time Titans assistant strength and conditioning coach Martin Lang told AAP on Wednesday he would face an all-new challenge in dealing with controversial star Jarryd Hayne.

“Well done to him if he has got the job. But good luck Garth, you are going to need it,” Lang said.

“That’s no disrespect to Garth. Everything I hear about him is very good.

“He’s got a great knowledge, good relationship with the players.

“But at the end of the day it will come down to how he handles Jarryd Hayne.

“I know these NRL jobs are few and far between but that’s a tough job to go into.”

The announcement of Brennan will leave all NRL clubs with coaches for next year, after Canterbury and South Sydney each also parted ways with their coaches at season’s end and appointed their successors.
