A heartbreaking loss, two daunting away matches to come and a trio of injuries – Saturday wasn’t a good night for Gold Coast’s NRL finals hopes.
The Titans’ 24-22 loss to the Warriors at Skilled Park means they all but certainly need to win at least one, if not both, of their remaining fixtures if they’re to finish in the top eight.
Unfortunately those games are both on the road, firstly against the table-topping Sydney Roosters and then at the defending premiers Melbourne.
And in a final twist that would make any coach a little nervous, starting trio Mark Minichiello, Ashley Harrison and Jamie Dowling have all picked up serious injuries.
Minichiello’s landmark 150th match for the club lasted 10 minutes before he left the field with a possible fractured eye socket.
Ex-Queensland Origin star Harrison played most of the second half against the Warriors with a broken hand while Dowling suffered a hip injury.
But coach John Cartwright isn’t throwing in the towel on his season by any means.
“We should get Birdy (Greg Bird) back next week,” he said.
“We were close to getting Luke Bailey back. Albert (Kelly) was sharp, he’ll be better for the run. Will Zillman should be back.
“I don’t fear any side in the competition when they play with that sort of character and pride. They’ve showed this year they can beat anyone.”
