Titans sign former NRL Shark Kelly

Gold Coast have thrown former Cronulla back Albert Kelly an NRL lifeline, signing the utility on a part-time trial deal.

Kelly has not played in the NRL since 2011 and was sacked midway through the 2012 campaign by the Sharks following a string of off-field incidents.

The 21-year-old, who can play halfback or fullback, then trained with the Knights but had his NSW Cup contract torn up in June after smashing a light at a Newcastle nightclub.

“Albert has an opportunity to train with the full-time squad over the off-season and to play some trial matches during the pre-season,” Titans’ football manager Scott Clark said.

“If he is able to tick all of the boxes both on and off the field then it could lead to something more permanent with the club.

“We have been able to provide a positive environment for other players who have had off-field issues in the past so hopefully Albert can make the most of his opportunity here with the Titans.”

Kelly is the third off-season recruit for the Titans with 19-year-old English fullback Matt Russell signing a two-year deal while former Canberra lower-grade prop Mark Ioane has signed a one-year deal.

All three will join Queensland representative David Taylor as new faces at the club when the Titans’ pre-season begins on November 5.
