Titans player quizzed on Henry’s future

Gold Coast veteran Anthony Don says he was approached by club boss Graham Annesley to discuss coach Neil Henry after back-to-back NRL horror shows.

Don revealed on Wednesday that he spoke casually about the coach with Annesley after the record-breaking Brisbane loss, but insists that he and the playing group remain supportive of the embattled mentor.

The admission comes in a week where Henry’s future at the club has been questioned, due to an alleged rift between the coach and some senior players.

Three weeks ago the Titans had strung three wins together and dismantled defending premiers Cronulla to be knocking on the door of the top eight.

One narrow defeate and two disastrous losses have followed – Saturday’s 54-0 hiding at home to the Broncos was the club’s biggest ever – and Henry’s position is now being questioned.

On Tuesday the coach refused to deny claims that he was against the signing of the high-profile Jarryd Hayne, while NewsCorp reported Annesley has met with as many as 12 players to discuss Henry’s performance.

Don stressed he was behind his coach, but did let slip that questions were being asked.

“There was a conversatiton, it was just general chit chat with Graham – it wasn’t anything official – that’s about it,” the winger said.

“The playing group 100 percent supports him; it wasn’t him that was out there on the field on the weekend putting in that embarrassing performance.

“We were responsible for it, it’s our fault.”

Keen to make amends against St George Illawarra in Sydney on Saturday, Don said the team would need to somehow find the resolve that was in abundance last season, but has now vanished.

“When things haven’t gone our way on the field we’ve rolled up a bit whereas last year we were more resilient … I can’t really put my finger on it (on why that is),” he said.

“We’ve all got to step up, we all know we have to get a lot better this weekend.”
