Tigers can beat NRL injuries: Lawrence

Wests Tigers centre Chris Lawrence believes the NRL club can overcome their increasing number of injuries to make this year’s finals.

The Tigers sit eighth after Monday’s defeat to North Queensland in Townsville, their fourth loss in five matches.

And coach Tim Sheens is struggling to put together a team for this weekend’s clash with the in-form South Sydney after Lawrence (ankle), young half Curtis Sironen (shoulder), Tim Moltzen (hamstring) and Ben Murdoch-Masila (ankle) were all injured against the Cowboys.

Superstar Benji Marshall is also in doubt for the Rabbitohs clash with toe and thumb injuries but is expected to be fit to play.

Lawrence’s worst fears were confirmed on Wednesday when he was ruled out for up to six weeks but he believes his teammates have shown they are capable of keeping their season alive.

“We’ve got good depth at the club, we’ve shown that previously … the young guys have been playing really well in the lower grades so whoever gets the opportunity I’m sure will step up,” said Lawrence.

The Tigers will face a Souths team without star fullback Greg Inglis, who received a three game ban for his shoulder charge on St George Illawarra’s Dean Young last weekend, but Lawrence believes the red-hot Bunnies can’t be taken lightly.

“They’ve got Nathan Merritt who’s been playing great footy and probably plays even better when he’s at fullback,” Lawrence said.

“They’re losing nothing with Nathan Merritt there.”
