Thaiday fine after NRL training scare

Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin dismissed health concerns for skipper Sam Thaiday after two unsuccessful attempts to train with teammates on Monday.

Thaiday left the paddock early in the 90-minute session for treatment to his lower back.

He returned but headed straight back to the dressing shed for more treatment.

Griffin was quick to point out the back niggle was an issue which the club had managed successfully all season.

“He just gets these back spasms, he’s been nursing it and it just flared up and he was a bit tight,” explained Griffin after training.

“We sent him in the sheds to have some physio on it.

“It’s something he’s been managing for a while, it’s not new and it’s not an issue.

Thaiday had the club’s physio massaging his back on the field before disappearing into the dressing room for more treatment.

“He came back out and starting running but it was just a bit tight,” said Griffin.

“It’s Monday afternoon so, rather than keep him training, we sent him inside for some treatment.

“I think he’ll run tomorrow (Tuesday) – it normally loosens up pretty quickly.

“He’s had it most of the year. It’s just a little bit of maintenance.”

With Brisbane playing four of their next six games away, experienced forward Petero Civoniceva said Saturday’s clash with the Warriors presented the first of several challenges during the representative season.

“It’s one of the toughest away trips and a big challenge for us as a group because they will want to make their fans feel proud,” he said.

After coming up short against the unbeaten Melbourne last round, the Warriors will be desperate to redeem themselves with a take-no-prisoners mentality against the Broncos, sitting second after six straight wins.

Civoniceva conceded the risk of being suspended was in the back of most players’ minds around representative time but they would have to rip against the Warriors who love to play aggressively.

“I guess if you start to worry about those things, it can bring down your game,” he said.

“You have to throw everything in against the Warriors pack. They’ve got so much mobility, so much size and they love to play second-phase football.”

The Broncos train again on Tuesday, fly to New Zealand on Thursday and have another training session on Friday.
