Team effort to cover Cordner: Roosters

Sydney Roosters second-rower Aidan Guerra says his NRL teammates will have to share the back-row burden left by the absence of Boyd Cordner.

Cordner, one of the Roosters’ best this season, injured his ankle in the ladder leaders’ last-start 28-22 win over Canberra.

The 21-year-old will be sidelined for six to 10 weeks, leaving him in a race against the clock to return before the Roosters’ season ends.

The imposing presence of Sonny Bill Williams, back from a two-week suspension, will help the tri colour’s cause in Monday night’s clash with Wests Tigers at Allianz Stadium.

But Guerra called on all of his fellow forwards to pitch in and cover Cordner’s void in what will be the latest test of the side’s much-lauded depth.

“It’s going to take a few people to step up. Because he’s been doing a lot of the tough stuff,” Guerra said.

“But he also does a lot of the more intricate things. He features in many aspects of our gameplan.

“Everyone’s going to have to step up.”

Guerra is no stranger to ankle problems, having broken the same ankle three times in 18 months during an injury-cursed start to his rugby league career with Melbourne Storm.

The 25-year-old, who left the Storm before playing his first NRL match, said Cordner would handle the setback well.

“I haven’t had the surgery he’s had on his ankle, but he knows how to deal with injuries,” Guerra said.
