NRL Roosters zero in on discipline
The heavily penalised Sydney Roosters are focusing on discipline this week, with other NRL opponents set to follow Cronulla’s successful tactic of getting under their skin.
The NRL ladder-leading Roosters had their eight-match winning streak shattered by the Sharks last Monday, losing 32-22 after being 26-0 down at the break.
They now only lead on for and against from local rival South Sydney, who they play in the final round.
Prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves had no doubt other clubs would try to emulate Cronulla, who rattled the Roosters in a fiery and intense encounter.
“They will watch that game and review it and i think that will be one of the points that they will definitely look at,” Waerea-Hargreaves said.
The Roosters are the most penalised club in the competition and coach Trent Robinson has zeroed in on discipline after Monday night.
“There were some points in the game where we were ill disciplined, that really let us down,” said Roosters centre Michael Jennings.
“I think that’s the main focus we’ve been looking at is our discipline and penalties that we’ve been conceding.
“There’s been a lot of tries off penalties, we’re really looking at that for this week.”
Roosters five-eight James Maloney wasn’t concerned about .his team’s poor penalty record.
“if we’re defending the penalties and not conceding points, its not an issue at all,” Maloney said.
“That’s something we’re working to cut down, but its only a problem when we’re leaking points off them.’
Maloney said the loss to the Sharks wasn’t a big concern as they prepared to host Gold Coast on Sunday.
“It might be a blessing going into the back end of the year, and into some big games,’ Maloney said.
“It probably really makes you aware of a few things, where I suppose if you get away with it and you win that game, you might not be so conscious of.
“I don’t think anyone here is too stressed about it. We’ve obviously got to learn from the mistakes and try and turn it around this week.
Asked about what the mistakes were, Maloney said “I think probably just keeping our heads
“I think we probably got caught up in the moment a little bit at times and got away from what we were trying to do.”
