Storm’s Widdop running after hip injury

Melbourne’s English playmaker Gareth Widdop is back running and remains hopeful of playing in this year’s rugby league World Cup as he recovers from a dislocated hip.

Widdop has run out of time to play in the Storm’s NRL title defence following the serious injury he suffered against Gold Coast in late June.

But the England international was out on the Storm training paddock on Wednesday as he attempts to recover in time for the World Cup, which kicks off in the UK on October 26.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy said the 24-year-old, who has signed to play with St George Illawarra next season, was making steady progress and had set himself the goal of playing in the tournament.

“He’s been back doing a little bit on the exercise bike and he’s been doing a bit of straight line running,” Bellamy said.

“He’s going to do some skills today and we’ll see how he goes.

“The World Cup is still a fair way away so I’m not sure that’s what St George want to hear but I think Gareth is leaning towards playing in the World Cup and obviously the Poms would be very glad to have him.”

The news will please England coach Steve McNamara, who was on the Gold Coast to watch Widdop play in the round-15 game when the injury occurred.

It is believed the Dragons are reluctant for Widdop to rush back prematurely and would prefer him not to risk the injury at the World Cup to ensure he is fully fit for the start of the 2014 NRL season.

Bellamy said Widdop, who would have spent four months on the sidelines, wouldn’t take any undue risks.

“I’m sure he won’t do anything silly but I’m sure he’d be a really good inclusion for England if he can get back to full health.”
