Storm’s Smith suffers back injury

Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith has been unable to return for the second half of their NRL clash with Parramatta due to a back injury.

Smith suffered the injury in the 26th minute when his back was twisted in an awkward tackle by Eels backrowers Tepai Moeroa and Nathan Brown.

He took a few minutes to gingerly get to his feet, with the help of the Melbourne trainer.

Smith bravely played on for another eight minutes, and even managed to kick a penalty goal, before succumbing to the injury and heading straight to the change-rooms.

The Storm said the injury wasn’t believed to be serious.

Melbourne also lost big winger Suliasi Vunivalu for the second half with hamstring tightness.
