Storm look to Smith to fill halfback void

Melbourne captain Cameron Smith could wear the No.7 jumper for the first time in over a decade following a knee injury to star five-eighth Cameron Munster.

The Storm will on Saturday seek scans for Munster, who suffered a suspected medial ligament injury in Friday’s 50-6 rout of the Warriors in Sydney.

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy fears being without Munster for up to six weeks.

“I think they’re talking 4-6 (weeks),” Bellamy said.

“Hopefully he’ll go have his scan tomorrow and (we can) be a bit more sure of what the damage is and how how long he’s going to be out.”

Munster was hurt early in the contest but played out the rest of the first half before being substituted at halftime.

Bellamy later revealed he wanted Munster to play the second half before being overruled by the club’s medical staff.

“It was a really brave performance,” Bellamy said.

The setback is almost certainly going to rule the Kangaroos representative out of next week’s mouth-watering clash with the Sydney Roosters.

The Storm also face grand finalists Canberra the following week.

“Devastated. It’s one of them games you want to get up for. It feels like a prelim or a final game, especially playing against the Roosters,” Munster said.

“They’ve been playing some really good footy the last couple of weeks. They’re the benchmark at the moment.”

Smith will be one of the options to play in the halves after filling in at halfback in the second half, with Brandon Smith at hooker.

“It’s an option without a doubt. Whether that’s the best option for us or not, we’ll have to have a bit of a chat about that and work it out,” Bellamy said.

“I thought Cameron done a pretty good job there as well.

“Brandon’s obviously a class dummy-half. He’s the Kiwi dummy-half. That certainly is an option for us, but there’s a couple of other options as well.”

Melbourne are also expected to find out where they will base themselves this week, with the club hopeful of shifting base to Queensland.

The Storm arrived in Sydney on Wednesday after being forced to leave Victoria indefinitely due to a spike in coronavirus cases in their home state.

They hosted the Warriors at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, but are keen on staging their next home game, against the Roosters, at Suncorp Stadium.

“Our feeder team is on the (Sunshine) Coast, and we’ve got a few guys in our squad from up around that area,” Bellamy said.

“That’s the main reason we want to go up there.

“That’s our first preference, but if we have to go to Newcastle, Wollongong or stay in Sydney, at the end of the day it is what it is.”
