Origin surface not up to scratch: Qld
Queensland assistant coach Michael Hagan admits Suncorp Stadium’s maligned surface is not 100 per cent ahead of their must-win State of Origin game two clash against on Wednesday night – but does not expect a Maroons slip-up.
Concerns were raised about the Brisbane ground after slippery conditions in last weekend’s Wallabies-British and Irish Lions Test were highlighted by fullback Kurtley Beale’s ill-fated penalty kick at fulltime.
The Blues camp – looking to seal their first series win since 2005 – even went as far as saying it was not up to Origin standard.
Hagan admitted the track was not ideal but it would not be used as an excuse if Queensland failed to keep alive hopes of an eighth straight series win.
“The surface is a little wet underfoot so it’s not 100 per cent,” he said on Wednesday.
“But it is certainly better than we thought it would be. I think by tonight it will be fine.”
Both teams had their first look at the surface since the Lions Test at a training session on Tuesday.
The Blues were told by ground staff to stay away from the northern end of the field but the Maroons appeared to have a free rein when they arrived later.
“We looked at the game on the weekend and I know they have worked very hard to get up to the scratch for tonight,” Hagan said.
“I don’t think the conditions will be an issue for either team. I think we should handle it fairly well.”
Both teams have left it up to individual players to choose their own footwear for the game despite Beale copping flak from the Lions for wearing moulded boots in greasy conditions.
