He is no stranger to a public slip-up.
But Kurtley Beale’s ill-fated last gasp penalty kick in the Wallabies’ 23-21 first Test loss to the British and Irish Lions still turned heads in the Queensland State of Origin camp.
After battling his off-field demons, replacement Wallabies fullback Beale had the chance to go from villain to hero when he lined up a 45m fulltime kick at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night – only to slide as he made contact.
While Queensland felt for Beale as they watched from the Sunshine Coast team camp, they also wondered about the ramifications in their must-win game two clash with NSW at the same venue on Wednesday night.
The greasy conditions that proved Beale’s downfall were duly noted by Queensland who can’t afford a similar blunder as they look to keep their feet in the Origin series.
“At one stage the Lions were pushing the Wallabies scrum back and they were just sliding and those boys were wearing long tags (studs),” Maroons backrower Matt Gillett said.
“It looked pretty slippery out there. A bit slimy.”
Gillett conceded he held fears about the Suncorp Stadium surface ahead of their crunch game two clash after battling away for the Broncos in the NRL this season.
“It hasn’t been too good this year actually. It’s been a lot like that slick mud you saw last night,” he said.
“Definitely I’ll be wearing long tags. It’s been a bit wet so I expect all the boys will be wearing them to stay on our feet as much as we can.
“It did look really slippery out there. You could see that from the top view (overhead camera) when Israel (Folau) scored his try – there wasn’t much grass around.”
