St. George Illawarra Dragons vs South Sydney Rabbitohs Preview

St George Illawarra transitions from one intense Sydney derby rivalry straight into another this Saturday as they host South Sydney in Wollongong. The match also marks an opportunity for returning Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett to secure a win against another of his former clubs.

The Dragons struggled in their clash against Canterbury, particularly during the 10 minutes either side of halftime, where a 6-4 lead turned into a 28-6 deficit. However, they showed resilience by scoring the final three tries in a 28-20 loss, with wayward goalkicking preventing a thrilling finish.

Mistakes and inconsistent performances from their emerging halves combination hindered the Dragons, but the experienced trio of Clint Gutherson, Valentine Holmes, and Damien Cook provided stability, while Christian Tuipolotu shone with a hat-trick.

Ryan Couchman’s season-ending ACL injury sees Blake Lawrie return to the bench from a hamstring issue, marking the Saints’ only change.

Meanwhile, the Rabbitohs narrowly defeated the Dolphins 16-14, with Tyrone Munro scoring twice in the first half and Isaiah Tass sealing the win with a try in the 67th minute.

Jye Gray impressed at fullback, Keaon Koloamatangi dominated in the forwards, and Jamie Humphreys’ performance at halfback has kept English recruit Lewis Dodd out of the lineup.

Souths have made two backline changes, with Fletchers Myers at center and Bayleigh Bentley-Hape on the wing, replacing the suspended Jack Wighton and the injured Munro (collarbone).

The Dragons have won three of their last four encounters against the Rabbitohs, including a 28-14 victory at Jubilee Oval in Round 10 last year. They also posted a 4-2 record at Wollongong in 2024.

While the Saints may have the edge in attacking firepower, Souths present strong value as 6.5-point underdogs, with Bennett already unlocking the potential of the Rabbitohs’ forward pack.
