Preview:

The last game of Round 8 is between the Dragons and the Sea Eagles, kicking off on Monday afternoon at 4.45pm.  This is not exactly the strongest Monday night game ever, with both teams struggling with confidence and form during the last few weeks.  The Dragons lost 54-10 last week to the Roosters, with the Sea Eagles having lost their last three matches.  Despite their history however, Manly look the goods this week against a Dragons side that will have trouble shaking off last week’s hiding.

Teams:

St George Illawarra Dragons:
Jason Nightingale, Brett Morris, Chase Stanley, Matt Cooper, Daniel Vidot, Jamie Soward, Nathan Fien, Dan Hunt, Mitch Rein, Jack Stockwell, Tyson Frizell, Ben Creagh (c), Trent Merrin
Interchange: Bronson Harrison, Matt Prior, Jack de Belin, Damien Cook, Michael Weyman, Will Matthews (two to be omitted)

Dugan’s Dragons deal still to be completed

St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust says Josh Dugan did himself no favours by snubbing the Dragons last month but concedes there’s still a chance he could end up at the joint-venture.

Dugan had looked set to join the Red V after being sacked by Canberra in March, only to instead agree to terms on a $2 million contract with Brisbane.

But after the NSW representative became embroiled in a social media spat with a Raiders fan, the Broncos pulled out of the deal leaving the 21-year-old high and dry and without a club.

The Dragons continued their heavy recruitment drive on Thursday by announcing the signing of South Sydney utility back Dylan Farrell on a three-year deal from the start of next season.

Farrell will be joined by Melbourne’s Gareth Widdop and English prop Mike Cooper, with Dugan and Rangi Chase still very much in the club’s sights.

“We went into the 2013 season under the (salary) cap so we have the potential to bring in a player or two before June 30,” Doust said.

“We had made an offer earlier in the piece for Josh Dugan and were a little disappointed that he chose to make his future plans with Brisbane.

“Quite frankly we don’t act positively to that.”

Dugan has been undergoing counselling with the NRL as he tries to get his career back on track after being shown the door by Canberra following a number of off-field incidents.

His manager was forced to deny claims he was involved in a fracas at a recent wedding in Canberra which would have put any hopes of reviving a move to the Dragons in jeopardy.

“We offered a lot for a player of his calibre,” Doust said.

“The whole thing then turned around and we need to consult the NRL about it.

“He’s had a pretty lengthy time off the field and must be anxious about the future.

“But we think we have a strong club culture and think Josh could fit into that.”

England international halfback Chase played for the Dragons earlier in his career and Doust is hopeful he will return, but said there have been problems in securing his release from Super League club Castleford.

“Rangi is known at the club and could be available,” he said.

“But there are complications in bringing in players from overseas mid-season.”
