Souths big names back but no Bennett yet

Wayne Bennett won’t arrive at South Sydney until later in the week following the dramatic sacking from Brisbane that finally triggered his NRL coaching job swap with Anthony Seibold.

Some of the Souths’ biggest names, including Sam Burgess, Adam Reynolds, John Sutton and Cody Walker, returned to Redfern Oval to start pre-season training on Monday but there was no sign of the new head coach.

The session was being overseen by Rabbitohs development coach Willie Peters.

“Not quite sure yet,” Souths CEO Blake Solly told Sky Sports Radio when asked when Bennett was due to arrive in Sydney.

“We had a conversation last night and Wayne’s got to move down, which is a straight forward process.

“He’s genuinely excited so we expect him to get down to Sydney as soon as he possibly can.”

Bennett agreed to immediately trade places with Seibold after he was sacked by Brisbane on Sunday.

It had been speculated for months that the pair would swap jobs after Seibold signed with Brisbane for 2020 and Bennett was signed by the Rabbitohs for the same year.

The move was delayed as Bennett stalled, refusing to quit amid speculation he wanted a full payout, before his 25-season reign at the Broncos, which included six grand final wins, came to end when he was sacked by CEO Paul White via voicemail on Sunday.

That came after Bennett called a media conference on Friday – which the club said it had no prior knowledge of – to announce he had decided to stay in Brisbane for 2019.

“There were definitely times there when it was frustrating,” Solly said

“But we were pretty clear once Anthony agreed to join Brisbane and Wayne agreed to join us in 2020, it made sense for that transfer to happen for the 2019 season.

“We made the running initially and tried to make it happen but it needed to be a decision between Wayne and Brisbane.”

There is not expected to be any turnover in the Rabbitohs’ assistant coaching staff as a result of Bennett’s arrival.

It was suggested that Broncos assistant Jason Demetriou would follow Bennett to Redfern however Solly said the incoming coach had agreed to work with the current staff.

Solly wouldn’t put a pass mark on expectations for the club’s 2019 season performance but was bullish about his hope of Bennett delivering the club’s 22nd title.

“From the improvement in 2018, (the fans) have seen what the team is capable of,” Solly said.

“Wayne is a six-time premiership winner at Brisbane, he knows how to win grand finals.

“He’s going to bring polish to an outstanding squad and hopefully we can go a long way.”
