South Sydney Rabbitohs v Nth Queensland Cowboys 2014 NRL Round 24 preview, tips and teams

RABBITOHS
The South Sydney Rabbitohs further enhanced their recent run of excellent form when disposing of the Brisbane Broncos last week 42 – 16.

It was the Rabbitohs fifth straight win during which time they’ve averaged a whopping 36.2 points per game compared to conceding only 15 points per game.

It was their thirteenth win this season, from a total of fourteen victories, by a margin of 13+.

The Rabbitoh’s backline is full of proven (Inglis, Sutton, Reynolds) and budding (Walker, Johnston) stars and with the forward back led by the Burgess brothers dominating their rivals, there’s plenty of opportunities for them the backline to display their wares.

Off the back of last month’s performances, the Rabbitohs have firmed into outright favouritism for this year’s premiership and rightly so.

With Ben T’eo out suspended, Kyle Turner comes into the second row whilst Bryson Goodwin and Chirs Grevsmuhl have been added to an extended bench.

COWBOYS
The Cowboys headed to Penrith on Monday night aiming for their fifth straight and with centre Kane Linnett scoring inside of the first five minutes, his tenth four-pointer of the season, the Cowboys got the perfect start however, as the Panthers have shown time and time again this year, they are not a team easily dismissed.

A try soon after halftime had the Cowboys’ nose back in front but again a determined Panthers struck back before courtesy of Matt Moylan field goal in the last minute of the game, outlasted the Cowboys to win by a point (23 – 22) and in the process, robbing them of reaching fifth spot on the ladder.

The Cowboys instead remain on 26th competition points, tied with Parramatta and Warriors, on 26 points.

With Parramatta taking on Manly and the Warriors hosting the Roosters, a win here could give them Cowboys some, if only a little, breathing room heading into the final two weeks of the season – both games of which are played in Townsville.

A loss will see them in a bitter dogfight for one of the remaining finals’ berths this season.

HEAD TO HEAD
The Cowboys handed the Rabbitohs an unexpected 20 – 18 defeat when they met at Townsville in round 16.

It was a bit of lull for the Rabbitohs who in the following week after that loss, were again unexpectedly defeated by the Titans however; those two losses have sparked the Rabbitohs into their best form all season.

They’ll meet the Cowboys, who are playing in Sydney for the second week in a row and backing up quickly from a Monday night game, at full strength and in form this week.

South Sydney has won their last five against the Cowboys when playing at ANZ Stadium and expect them to keep that record in tact, covering the line in the process.
