Soliola return Raiders’ last middle relief

Sia Soliola will revive his NRL season against the Warriors next Sunday after the Canberra forward at one stage feared he’d played his last game of the year.

Soliola will return from a facial fracture for the Raiders, in a timely boost for the side’s injury-ravaged forward pack just before the NRL’s finals.

The off-contract veteran has not played since round eight when he suffered a gruesome injuries, at one stage sparking fears he could’ve played his last NRL game.

Soliola is however likely to be the last middle to return this year.

Coach Ricky Stuart is not expecting Emre Guler (ankle) back in 2020 and only giving Corey Horsburgh (foot) a faint hope if the Raiders go deep into the finals.

Hooker and captain Josh Hodgson has also long been ruled out for the rest of the season.

“I am going to try and fit him (Soliola) in somewhere next week to give him some minutes. He was available this week,” Stuart said.

“Unless there is a miracle (no other middles will return).

“I’m just keeping my fingers crossed we don’t get any mroe injuries in the middle or across the board. Because we can’t afford any.

“They are working really hard in rehab, but unfortunately I don’t think there is much hope.”

Soliola on Saturday filled ball boy duties in the team’s 37-8 win over St George Illawarra, with Stuart praising his humility.

But on the field, the Raiders’ remaining middles were just as impressive.

Hudson Young had the best game of his career with 180 metres after scoring the game’s first try, while Joseph Tapine is also in a purple patch.

Josh Papalii also got through unscathed after going down with a shoulder injury last week, as Canberra dominated the battle of the packs.

“Our middles have been our backbone all year, and there are so many of those guys that have taken an extra workload,” Stuart said.

“We’ve got a number of great players who can make the 17 all sitting in the rehab group.

Those guys in the middle have all had to take extra responsibility and workload.”
