Snapshot of round five of the NRL

WHAT HAPPENED IN ROUND FIVE OF THE NRL:

* Quote of the Round: “It was an absolute debacle, it’s a disgrace.” – North Queensland coach Paul Green on the referees’ failure to stop play with Nene Macdonald and John Asiata down injured against Melbourne.

* Man of the Round: Ben Hunt scored two tries and set up two others to make a statement for the Dragons in their 40-4 flogging of Canterbury. Cody Walker also deserves a mention, scoring four tries in South Sydney’s defeat of the Warriors.

* Stat that Matters: Cameron Smith overtook Hazem El Masri as the NRL’s all-time leading point-scorer, becoming just the 17th player to hold the mantle and the third forward..

* Magic Moment: The Wests Tigers looked lost on their last play with scores locked at 24-24 against Brisbane, before Michael Chee Kam ran through six Broncos defenders to cross and win the match on the last play.

* Talking Point: How was Josh McGuire only fined for an apparent eye gouge on Queensland State of Origin teammate Cameron Munster in North Queensland’s loss to Melbourne?

* Judiciary Watch: Titans – Mitch Rein (dangerous throw), Jarrod Wallace (shoulder charge); Cowboys – Josh McGuire (contrary conduct), Nene Macdonald (dangerous contact), Kurt Baptiste (dangerous contact); Sea Eagles – Addin Fonua-Blake (high tackle), Curtis Sironen (high tackle); Roosters – Joey Manu (dangerous contact).

* Casualty Ward: Sharks: Andrew Fifita (hamstring); Knights – Aidan Guerra (broken leg); Cowboys – Nene Macdonald (broken ankle), John Asiata (elbow), Panthers – Isaah Yeo (shoulder); Warriors – Blake Green (groin) Dragons – Paul Vaughan (ankle); Eels – Blake Ferguson (ribs); Raiders – Joseph Tapine (ankle).

* Under Pressure: Brisbane have now lost four of their opening five, leaving Queensland teams with just three victories in their opening 15 games. The Broncos have Canberra, Cronulla and South Sydney in the next three weeks, meaning their nightmare start to the season could continue.
