Sharks bounce into NRL finals with hope

When news that Fine Kula was clear of cancer reached his Cronulla teammates on Monday, it gave the NRL side hope that anything is possible.

The 21-year-old was given the all clear after a 10-month battle with stage four brain cancer, which ended his promising career.

Kula’s diagnosis kicked off an incredibly difficult season for the Sharks but, on the cusp of an elimination final, the latest update was just the news his former teammates needed to hear.

“It was a massive lift… when we got the text from Ronny (Mulitalo) on Monday, mate, it just gives you goosebumps,” prop Aaron Woods on Wednesday said.

“We couldn’t believe it. We all got told stage four cancer, the success rate was (not good).

“It rocked us in the pre-season camp at the start of the year when we found out.

“Only a couple of months ago he got told some bad news, so there were some tough conversations there.

“To hear how far he’s come now, it has lifted us as a group.

“Yeah, we did lose a game on Saturday but to see him come through this whole situation is phenomenal.”

And if the inspirational Kula can beat cancer against all the odds the Sharks have renewed faith they can disrupt the finals with a victory on Saturday.

They have been written off by almost everyone but they do not care.

Coming off a loss to Canberra last weekend, the Sharks will now travel to the nation’s capital to try and reverse the result and keep their season alive.

The Sharks have been blasted for their losing record to top eight teams this season, having not beaten any of the finalists.

But skipper Wade Graham said it’s nothing to be concerned about.

“Despite going in as underdogs, we are in the finals, eight teams finished up this weekend and we’re not one of them,” he said.

“The boys should be proud of their effort.

“Our destiny is in our own hands.

“If we play our best footy game by game we’ll give ourselves a chance.

“As long as we’re playing, we’re in with a chance.”
