Sharks board to decide Fifita’s fate

Andrew Fifita will reportedly front the Cronulla board next week to answer allegations he abused a junior referee.

Fifita and his brother David have been stood down by the club following a heated confrontation with a referee at a Penrith District Junior Rugby League match last weekend.

Fairfax Media reported that the pair have been issued with show-cause notices and will face the club board on Thursday.

It has been alleged Andrew threatened to “smash” a referee after an A-grade game in which David was acting as a trainer.

Andrew has also been handed a breach notice for a 12-month ban from PDJRL games however will have a chance to provide his version of events at a hearing next week.

David has pleaded guilty to his charges and has accepted a one-year ban from PDJRL games, while Wests Tigers forward Matt Lodge will not contest his ban which runs until the end of the year.

Andrew has said he plans to contest some of the allegations made against him.

“I’ve given them (the NRL) my statement and when it comes out, it will be a big relief,” Fifita told the Nine Network on Thursday.

“I’ve been branded since last Saturday with a really bad look. Everyone’s heard the one side this whole time since it happened.”
