Sandow can overcome NRL slump: Crocker

Souths co-captain Michael Crocker says struggling former NRL teammate Chris Sandow will come good and emerge from his early season slump at new club Parramatta.

Sandow, who made a big money move from the Rabbitohs to the Eels has battled to impose himself on an ailing Parramatta, who are running last with one win from six games.

Crocker felt improving communication and combinations with Sandow’s new colleagues would help the halfback raise the level of his game.

“He’s obviously under a lot of pressure being one of their major signings and one of their major playmakers,” Crocker said.

“I think it’s just a matter of them working on their combinations and getting comfortable with each other.

“They just need to communicate and I’m sure once they gel it’s going to be pretty exciting.

“I think it’s a high pressure situation, It’s a lot harder for a half to go into a team and take over then it is for any other player.

“I’m sure the more he works with Ben Roberts and Jarryd Hayne and they get their combination right, I think the better they will be.”

He defended Sandow against claims from legendary Eels halfback Peter Sterling that the new Parramatta No.7 was four to five kilos overweight.

“He’s a little nugget so it’s hard to tell if he’s carrying any, but it’s probably more so that he’s not taking the line on than anything,” Crocker said.

“That’s probably why (Sterling is) probably saying he’s unfit. Chrissy is at his best when he’s taking on the line and I don’t think he’s been doing that.”

Crocker said new Souths No.7 Adam Reynolds was getting better each week.

“He’s really starting to come out of his shell a little bit and blossom into a good player, his control has been great,” Crocker said.

Crocker 31, wants to play at least one more season, preferably with Souths.

“The body feels good and I feel fresh. I feel excited when I get out on the field,” Crocker said.

“That’s how I base my love for the game, on how my body is talking to me.

“I definitely want to stay here. I don’t want to go to another club.”

Souths have won three of their past four games after starting with two loses and Crocker attributed their improved form to better concentration and patience.

The Rabbitohs play the Warriors in New Zealand on Sunday and Crocker is wary of the Kiwi side who have won just two of six games and are coming off a disappointing loss to Canberra.
