Ryles out for Storm’s Canberra NRL clash

Veteran prop Jason Ryles’ NRL debut for Melbourne is on hold due to a hamstring injury.

Ryles, who was released by Sydney Roosters last year after a disappointing season, will miss the opening game against Canberra on Saturday after sustaining the injury against Brisbane in the recent trial in Hobart.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy is hopeful the 33-year-old former NSW front-rower will be available for his side’s round two clash with South Sydney.

“He’ll probably need another week,” Bellamy said on Tuesday.

Recently re-signed centre Will Chambers has also missed out along with centre Maurice Blair.

Chambers returned to the Storm following unspectacular stints with Super Rugby side Queensland Reds and Munster in Ireland.

However, Bellamy said he did not feel the 23-year-old was quite ready to return to the NRL and has named Justin O’Neill and Dane Nielsen in the centres.

“Will hasn’t been back that long and Bobby’s (Blair) missed a lot of the pre-season with injury so the other guys have got the jump on them,” Bellamy said.

Former NSW forward Ryan Hoffman will play against the Raiders after returning to the Storm following a spell with Wigan.

“Ryan’s back in and it’s good to have him back,” Bellamy said.

“He’s obviously a wonderful player in his own right and he’s also a wonderful leader.”

Bellamy is wary of facing the club he represented for almost a decade and is expecting a tough test in the nation’s capital.

“They’re a very committed side and a very big and physical side,” Bellamy said.

“We only played them a couple of weeks ago in the trial and they played really well so we’ll be expecting exactly the same this weekend.”
