Reni Maitua signs with Leigh Centurions

Former NRL star Reni Maitua has signed a one-year deal with second-tier English rugby league club Leigh Centurions.

Maitua, a premiership-winner with Canterbury in 2004, played his final NRL game with the same club last season after stints with Cronulla and Parramatta between 2009 and 2013.

The 33-year-old back-rower moved to the English Super League at the beginning of this year, starting with Salford before playing on loan for the Featherstone Rovers.

“Reni is a great player who will add versatility and strike to our squad. I am looking forward to him joining the team and being a part of another successful year for the Centurions,” said Leigh coach Paul Rowley.

The signing comes 48 hours after Leigh announced the capture of Salford’s Australian forward Cory Paterson on a three-year deal.

The Centurions will remain in the Kingstone Press Championship in 2016 after topping the league this year, but managing to win just one game in the Super 8 qualifiers.
