Canberra’s ‘Mr Fix it’ Jack Wighton is optimistic he’ll overcome a groin niggle to help his injury-riddled NRL side bounce back from two straight losses when they host North Queensland on Sunday.
The promising 20-year-old has filled in at left and right wing plus left and right centre this year to become a valuable linchpin for the 11th-placed side.
Scans on Monday came back showing no signs of major damage.
“It’s still a little bit sore, but we’ll see how the rest of the week goes. I’m hopeful,” Wighton said.
“It just feels a bit tight and a bit tender, but we only had the game two days ago.”
It’s positive news for the Raiders, who are already without outside fullback Josh Dugan (sacked), centre Blake Ferguson (suspended indefinitely), and wingers Edrick Lee (broken arm) and Sandor Earl (dislocated elbow).
Replacement winger Sami Sauiluma has also been placed on report for a shoulder charge in the first half of Friday night’s 32-2 loss to South Sydney.
While the Raiders are desperate for a win following back-to-back away losses to Wests Tigers and the Rabbitohs, Wighton stressed he’ll still be erring on the side of caution.
“I’m very keen to play and help the team, but you’ve also got to be smart, because there’s still eight games after the (round 18) bye to go,” he said.
“At Mounties, we’ve got a lot of talent coming through, so the spots are going to be filled pretty easily because there’s so much talent there.”
That talent isn’t confined to the Mounties, with the Raiders signing former Gold Coast winger Jordan Rapana and Warriors back Bill Tupou last week.
The Raiders’ injury woes are also taking their toll on the forward pack, with news that prop Dane Tilse is in doubt to play the Cowboys after suffering a grade-one medial ligament strain against the Rabbitohs.
Tilse’s injury would be a huge blow for the Raiders’ momentum against the big Cowboys pack, as representative props Brett White (eye socket) and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs (foot) are already nursing injuries from the sidelines.
