Raider Sam Williams in Wakefield’s sights

Super League club Wakefield Trinity are keen on taking Canberra halfback Sam Williams back to England for the 2021 campaign.

Coach Chris Chester confirmed he has spoken to Williams, who scored six tries in 24 games for Wakefield in 2017, about a return to Belle Vue next season.

The 29-year-old, who has been named in the Raiders squad for Friday evening’s NRL preliminary final against Melbourne at Suncorp Stadium, also had a spell in Europe with French side Catalans Dragons in 2014.

Wakefield are looking to replace veteran halfback Danny Brough, who is joining Bradford in 2021.

“I’ve spoken to Sammy, I’ve kept in contact with him,” Chester said.

“The position is one we feel we need to strengthen and sooner rather than later, it’s the priority at the minute.

“But there’s certainly no deal done with Sammy or any other player at this moment in time.

“A lot will go down to the budget, we still don’t know where we’re at with that yet.”

Williams signed a two-year deal with the Raiders in November 2019 and captained them in his only appearance so far in 2020, a 38-28 victory over Cronulla in the final game of the regular season.
