Rabbitohs secure fourth Burgess brother

South Sydney have the chance to become the first rugby league side in more than a century to field four brothers in the same team.

The rabbit warren at Redfern will be choc-full of England’s Burgess brothers in 2013 after young forward Thomas signed a one-year NRL deal.

With superstar older brother Sam and fellow siblings Luke and George already part of the Rabbitohs’ set-up, Thomas is the fourth and last remaining Burgess to agree to a switch from the English Super League.

Souths announced on Monday that Thomas will move from Bradford, while his twin George has also re-signed for the next two years keeping him in red and green until the end of 2014.

The double signing raises the prospect of the Rabbitohs being the first team to field four siblings since 1910.

Coincidently, the last team do it was Annandale who had the Norman brothers Ray, Roy, Rex and Bernard in their side that lost 19-2 to Souths.

It was a day of good news for the brothers Burgess and the club with co-captain Sam cleared of an ankle injury and escaping a high-tackle suspension at the NRL judiciary.

George, 20, made his NRL debut this season against Canterbury in round 13 before being ruled out with a lower intestine injury after just three games.

Thomas has played 44 matches for the Bulls in England since debuting in 2011 and, at 196cm and 115kg, he’ll add good size to the Rabbitohs pack.

“We’re really pleased to have secured the services of these two young front-rowers,” said coach Michael Maguire.

“George has come a long way in my time with the club and was making the most of his first grade opportunities until an unfortunate injury struck.

“He’s back training and is working hard to get back into shape and hopefully he can play a part in the remainder of the 2012 season.

“Thomas is another addition to our strong front row and will create further competition for spots which strengthens the club as a whole.

“We value ourselves as a family-orientated club and to have Sam, Luke, George and Thomas all with us next year is something very special for the club and the game.”
