Petero, Hannant bond inspires Broncos

Brisbane hope a special bond forged on State of Origin battles and adversity can inspire the young Broncos to a seventh NRL premiership in October.

Representative props Petero Civoniceva and Ben Hannant – teammates in Brisbane’s last premiership success in 2006 – have been reunited at the Broncos this season with their knowledge and big-game experience considered crucial to a youthful squad.

The pair’s NRL journey was split in 2008 when salary cap restraints squeezed Civoniceva out of the club.

Hannant packed his bags and moved to the Bulldogs the following year before returning to the Broncos’ fold last season.

Civoniceva, who returned home from Penrith this season, said his mateship with Hannant, strengthened by their Queensland Origin experiences, was unbreakable.

“There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him,” Civoniceva told AAP.

Civoniceva remains undecided about adding to his 30 Origins this season – the most by any forward – or even if he’ll saddle up again for the Broncos in 2013.

Whether he is selected in Australia’s Test side to play the Kiwis in Auckland later this month could have a bearing on his decision.

Regardless, Hannant says he’s excited to again be playing footy with a man who’s an inspiration to everyone at the Broncos.

“I don’t want Petero to ever give it up – he’s awesome,” said Hannant.

“Playing alongside someone like Petero makes you strive to be a better player.”

“It’s great for me (having him here) because there’s a tough battle up front with Josh McGuire, Petero, myself, (Scott) Anderson, Dave Hala and Dunamis (Lui).

“I want to keep my starting spot and I’m sure Petero does as well but there’s a lot of competition.”

Hannant, well and truly back in the Origin selection picture following a great start to the season, said playing without niggling injuries had helped him hit form early.

“It’s great to be playing injury-free – that’s the hardest thing,” he told AAP this week.

“If you can get that consistency where you’re not playing injured or missing games, you can enjoy your footy.

“I’ve had a good off-season. I’ve gone back to doing the things that work for me, doing the hard work that got me there in the first place.”

Meanwhile Hannant said there was great feeling within the club with everyone playing for each other.

“There’s a lot of improvement in us but it’s a great sign we’re playing for each other and don’t want to let each other down,” he said.

“We’re not playing perfect footy and we’re not sticking to our structure which we should be, but it’s a long season and we’ve got plenty of time to get it right.”
