Penrith Panthers vs St. George Illawarra Dragons Preview

Penrith righted the ship in the last three weeks before the Round 13 bye, conceding just 14 points total in disposing of the Warriors, Roosters and Broncos to reclaim their customary spot atop the NRL ladder.

The Panthers are conceding less than 12 points a game this season – and while their attack hasn’t been up the same standard, they proved against the Roosters than can take teams apart that don’t turn up defensively.

But the Origin period is here to provide another hurdle to benchmark team.

NSW contingent Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai, Liam Martin, Stephen Crichton, Isaah Yeo and Brian To’o have all been named, though Ivan Cleary has not been afraid to rest his rep stars in the past.

Injured trio Spencer Leniu, Matt Eisenhuth and Izack Tago are all part of the reserves contingent.

St George Illawarra’s post-coach sacking bounce lasted just one week, following up a stirring last-minute win over the Roosters with an insipid 26-12 defeat to the Dolphins devoid of direction and desire.

Ben Hunt was clearly missed, but the lack of fire was palpable across the board.

Hunt, the Dragons’ sole Origin rep, is named to back up, while Jaydn Su’A (knee) returns to the side.

Billy Burns comes into the pack, Jack Bird is being rested, and Moses Mbye and Toby Couchman drop out of the 17.

The Panthers have won their last five against the Dragons.

Though it was a close-fought 20-16 result in their Jubilee Oval clash in Round 2 last year, they have won the last two clashes at Penrith by margins of 22 or more.

Without the Origin unknowns, this would shape as a bloodbath.

Even if the Panthers are forced to rest a few guns, the Dragons don’t look capable of heading out west and causing a boilover.
