I can lead Tigers out of this mess: Potter

Mick Potter insists he’s the man to get the Wests Tigers back on track despite facing a review as the NRL club axes three of his support staff.

The club released a statement on Thursday amid reports claiming first year-coach Potter will be sacked at season’s end, with his team languishing second-last on the ladder with just six wins.

But rather than douse the flames the document only served to fan them, with his position to come under close scrutiny.

Potter has a year to run on his two-year deal and the former Super League mentor was adamant he could lead the club out of their current woes.

” I think I’m doing a good job … I’m confident I’m doing a good job,” Potter said.

“The signs are there the club is moving forward. There are a lot of young guys who are stepping up right now.

“We are not getting the results right now but the future is looking good.”

Potter said the blame for the club’s poor form lay at his feet but he was hopeful of remaining.

“You are never really sure but I understand I’m under contract for another 12 months,” he said.

“I’m confident of keeping my job.

“I take responsibility for the football team. We are where we are a little bit because of circumstances beyond our control but we have had a tough year. We don’t shy away from that but I’m confident the club is moving forward.”

The club statement said three unnamed members of Potter’s support staff would not have their contracts renewed for the 2014 season and that a review of operations would be conducted.

“The board and management of the club need to fully understand the position we find ourselves in and work with Mick to come to the best outcome for both himself and the club,” the statement read.

“There are many options we can consider. The most favourable of these options is to work with Mick to develop a coaching structure and provide the personnel the club needs to create a consistent winning attitude.”

Of the decision to let key support staff go Potter said: “We had to make a few changes.”

Potter controversially benched superstar Benji Marshall as the club endured its worst losing streak earlier this year and rumours have persisted the duo have fallen out.

Marshall has since announced he will leave the Tigers at season’s end to play Super Rugby, most likely with Auckland-based franchise The Blues.

Meanwhile the club continues to pay the contract of Potter’s long-term coach predecessor Tim Sheens.
