Preview:

Parramatta continue to struggle this season and in the past two weeks, have experienced heavy losses of 20 points to St. George in 10 and 38 points when playing the Titans in their most recent match in Round 11 a fortnight ago.

Having the bye last week, they’ll need to have found something miraculous if they are to overcome the Sydney Roosters, whom they last to 50-0 earlier this year.

On their most recent efforts, a similar score line could be on the cards again this weekend.
The only positive you can throw up for Parramatta, is that all three of their wins this season, have come from their four games at Parramatta Stadium.

Sydney Roosters sit third on the competition ladder, with eight wins from eleven games.

Their third loss of the season came against Melbourne in their most recent game (26-18) and broke a five game winning streak.

Although several Roosters will be backing up from Wednesday night’s State of Origin, they’ll be too strong for a Parramatta outfit that has offered little in recent weeks.

Note three of the last four clashes between these two sides, including the two most recent, have resulted in total match points exceeding 50.

Stuart set to stamp mark on new-look Eels

Ricky Stuart ruthlessly stamped his mark on Parramatta on Wednesday, telling at least a dozen NRL players their services will not be required in 2013.

The former NSW mentor is keen to make an impression on the Eels, having inherited an ageing squad – and the results of that will be seen as soon as next season.

It is understood co-captain Reni Maitua and veterans Ben Smith, Willie Tonga and Matt Keating are among the players who have been told to find other clubs.

Smith and Maitua have another year to run on their contracts after this season but have been told they are free to look elsewhere.

Tonga, a marquee recruit from North Queensland, is reportedly on $350,000 a season but injury has restricted him to just 12 games since joining the club at the start of last year.

Following the Eels’ last-start thrashing to Gold Coast in Mudgee, Stuart said his squad was “nowhere near” first grade standard and lamented that he was unable to make mass changes due to a lack of suitable replacements.

“There’ll be changes (but) we haven’t got a lot of options at the moment,” Stuart said.

Some of those options will arrive in the off-season, with big-name recruits Corey Norman, William Hopoate, Lee Mossop and Gareth Hock to join the club.

The mass culling could also clear the decks for more recruits.

The Eels came close to inking a deal with code-hopping superstar Israel Folau in 2012 but were unable to have the contract ratified by the NRL in time.

Folau went on to sign a one-year deal with Super Rugby team the Waratahs, but has yet to decide his future beyond this season.

Eels chief executive Ken Edwards issued a statement saying players had been absolved of the club’s poor on-field performance for too long and it was time they were held accountable.

“Our members, fans and sponsors deserve and demand more than what we have achieved and today the Eels declare that enough is enough,” he wrote.

“Some of these players are off contract at the completion of this season while the others are contracted for 2014 but have been told that they are not a part of the club’s plans moving forward and have been offered early releases.

“Over a long period of time, there have been a lot of people who have lost their jobs at the Eels without the playing group ever being held accountable.

“As of today, the playing group is being held accountable.”

Stuart has introduced a raft of young players this year, including Vai Toutai, Kelepi Tanginoa, Kaysa Pritchard and Junior Paulo, but has repeatedly refused to lay any blame at their feet.

“I’m not aiming this at the kids we’re bringing into the game,” Stuart said after the Titans loss.

“…It’s a matter of us getting up to a standard of being able to perform, and that’s probably as honest as I can be regards to our game.

“And we’re nowhere near it.”

That message was backed up by Edwards on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, not all are up to the standards that we require,” Edwards said.

“As we have said constantly, a winning team culture is not built overnight but, for it to develop, it is reliant on talent, belief and commitment.”
