Parenthood prompted Tomkins’ NRL exit

Sam Tomkins has revealed the real reason for his return to England – he has become a father for the first time.

The Wigan and England fullback, who left Super League at the end of the 2013 season to try his luck in the NRL, cut short his stay with Warriors in order to return to his home-town club for 2016.

He previously cited homesickness, a longing for the familiarity of Wigan and the Warriors team who have become a second family, for his reason but told the Daily Mail his girlfriend Charlotte gave birth to Rex in December.

“Just as it was a good time to leave when I did, it was a good time to come back again as well,” Tomkins said. “The opportunity to return to Wigan was too good to miss and it meant we could raise the baby at home.”

Tomkins, 26, was forced to miss the end of the NRL season through injury and, after undergoing knee surgery in November, is expected to be sidelined until around Easter.
