Melbourne speedster Ryan Papenhuyzen admits he’s missing their Albury training base as the Storm returned for their first NRL session at AAMI Park.

The Storm were given the green light this week to return from the border town but Papenhuyzen has mixed feelings about being home.

Living alone in Melbourne, the 21-year-old said he misses being surrounded by his teammates in the camp environment.

“We all got to hang around and although it was weird as we had to social distance it was quite fun all being in the same camp,” Papenhuyzen said.

“One of the advantages was that we were all together the whole time but now we’re here we have to go back home and lock ourselves away until training the next day.

“I thought there were a lot of positives that came out of that camp and I enjoyed my time up there.

“Now I’m hanging around training to fill in some time cause I don’t want to go and do nothing.”

The team is training on the actual AAMI Park surface rather than their usual field next door due to strict NRL requirements that they can’t share venues.

Papenhuyzen said the team was in good shape but just needed to sharpen their skills and combinations ahead of the May 28 competition re-start.

Asked if the premiership would mean as much if won under different playing conditions, Papenhuyzen was adamant it would.

“Of course – I don’t care whether it’s 10 or 20 rounds and I’m doing everything I can to make it this year.”
