Papalii facing NRL ban for Dugan hit

Canberra forward Josh Papalii faces up to three games on the sideline for the shoulder charge that flattened St George Illawarra’s Josh Dugan.

Papalii has been charged with a grade-two offence over the hit in the Raiders’ golden-point win over the Dragons on Friday night.

Dugan was taken from the field as a result of the contact, which appeared to be with his head after he collected a kick late in the second half.

Papalii can escape with a two-match ban if he enters an early guilty plea, which would allow him to face Cronulla in round 22.

Any suspension would further hurt the Raiders forward pack, with Shannon Boyd (knee) and Luke Bateman (cheekbone) already racing the clock to be fit to face Melbourne next Saturday night.

The Raiders are 10th on the NRL ladder, and likely need to win five of their last seven matches to have any chance of making the finals.
