Origin result won’t sway Slater and Cronk

Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater say the outcome of next week’s State of Origin decider won’t influence whether they seek to return next year.

The Maroons will pay tribute to half Johnathan Thurston, ahead of July 12’s series decider at Suncorp Stadium, while fellow Queensland veterans Cronk and Slater are yet to decide whether game three will be their final Origin.

Thurston’s Origin career is over after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in game two.

Next week’s game three may also draw the curtain on the glittering Origin careers of halfback Cronk and veteran fullback Slater.

Cronk — a veteran of 21 Origins — is yet to decide his playing future after announcing he will leave NRL club Melbourne and join his fiancee in Sydney in 2018.

“There are some moments when you are going down to the training track and think ‘this could be it’,” 33-year-old Cronk said of his Origin future.

“But that’s external thinking. To be successful you have to be internal and focus to get the result.

“Emotion doesn’t win you a game of football, no matter the result on Wednesday night it won’t have a bearing on my decision.”

Slater, 34, admits he must make up his mind in the next couple of months whether he wants to play a 16th NRL season next year and extend an Origin career that stands at 28 appearances.

“I don’t know whether I will be playing next year or not,” Slater said.

“The series result won’t be a factor.

“My decision is solely around whether I can put 100 per cent of myself into next year.

“If I can’t then I will retire.”

Queensland entered their Gold Coast camp on Wednesday.

They are aiming to become the first Maroons side since 1987 to clinch a series by winning games in Sydney and Brisbane after losing their home opener.

NSW are aiming to claim their first success in a series decider at Suncorp Stadium since 2005.
