Don’t try telling Corey Parker Queensland’s State of Origin dominance is getting boring.
The 32-year-old lock remembers only too well people making the same argument in 2005 after NSW had wrapped up its third straight series victory.
Parker was dumped from the Maroons following that campaign, missing out on the first five series won by Mal Meninga’s all-conquering team before earning a recall for the 2011 series.
The veteran says he still remembers how much it hurt to lose an Origin series and is relishing every moment of his second chance.
“In 04-05 when I played and we were beaten by New South Wales, I spent six years on the sidelines,” he said.
“It does hurt. I guess not only are you representing each other and your families, it’s the entire state. Four million people are involved and there’s an expectation.
“In 04-05 I probably didn’t respect it or understand it to the degree it deserved.
“Six years is a long time to watch your mates running around enjoying playing for Queensland. It’s been a good journey.”
Parker and the entire team hit the training paddock on Wednesday at their camp on the Gold Coast, although Justin Hodges, Billy Slater and captain Cameron Smith were on light duties.
Parker said he there was no concern over the trio, it was just a case of giving them a little bit of extra recovery from last weekend’s NRL matches.
“It’s just minor bumps from the weekend’s games,” he said.
“We don’t play until next Wednesday so it’s probably in everyone’s best interests that they get them freshened up and right for the start.”
