One win doesn’t make NRL season: Panthers

Captain Kevin Kingston says Penrith’s shock win over Melbourne will amount to little if they can’t back it up against the Warriors this weekend.

The Panthers produced the upset of the NRL season so far on Sunday night when they accounted for the premiers 12-10 in a victory that could help to define their season.

After losing Michael Jennings, Luke Lewis and Michael Gordon in the offseason, Panthers coach Ivan Cleary looked to rebuild the side with a number of unheralded players.

The new-look Panthers were not given much hope of making an impact on the NRL this season by many critics and Kingston said his side need to put together a series of good performances before they can start patting themselves on the back.

“We got a lot of confidence out of that performance against Melbourne and we now know we can put that sort of performance together but we need to be consistent,” Kingston told AAP.

“We were written off at the start of the year and that was fine by us – we have used that as motivation. But I don’t think that one win will make everyone sit up and take notice. We need to put a good block of performances together and that is what we are looking to do.”

The Panthers host the unpredictable Warriors in round 10 action on Saturday night and Kingston said his side know they need to back up their impressive effort against Melbourne after a big win over Parramatta in round seven was followed by a 30-6 loss to Sydney Roosters.

“It was important that we enjoyed that win over Melbourne but, all week, we have been very focused on the Warriors,” Kingston said.

“They are a tough side and they are a better side than their spot on the ladder might suggest.

“The expectation is there now within our playing group that we continue to play well. That is what is driving us. With that win over Melbourne, we have set the standard for how we want to play and it is up to us to maintain that standard.”
