NZ out of Nines as Eels, Manly progress

Gold Coast, Penrith, Parramatta and Manly have qualified for the Auckland Nines quarter-finals after perfect results on day one.

Titans star Jarryd Hayne was immense for his side, who belted NRL premiers Cronulla 25-4 in the tournament opener before accounting for Canterbury 17-10.

The Panthers also clinched a finals berth after toppling the Bulldogs and then shocking the Sharks despite missing a host of NRL stars.

But in sour news for event organisers, the home-favoured Warriors crashed out after successive losses to the Sea Eagles and Eels.

Losing their first game 15-11 to Manly, the Warriors then wilted under pressure against a zippy Eels attack to concede three tries in a 17-0 defeat.

Tasked with a do-or-die situation against Parramatta, the Warriors quickly found themselves chasing the game after tries to Corey Norman and Honeti Tuha.

The game was then quickly put out of reach for the hosts when Semi Radradra turned on the afterburners and touched down on the left edge.

The early elimination, greeted with boos by the Warriors faithful, was made worse by a groin strain to star halfback Shaun Johnson in the warm-up.

“He just had a tightness in his groin area,” assistant coach Steve McNamara said.

“We decided not to take the risk with him.”

The Warriors face the Dragons in a dead rubber on Sunday afternoon after the Red V fell to the Sea Eagles, who won 23-20.

Earlier on Saturday, nines favourites North Queensland and Brisbane lived up to their billing with first-up wins.

All eyes were on Cowboys legend Johnathan Thurston early in the 27-15 win over the Sydney Roosters, but Michael Morgan was first to impress with a solo effort down the right flank.

Gideon Gela-Mosby also jumped to the top of the try-scoring leaderboard with a hat-trick, including one scorcher down the left flank.

“You see a lot more space when you’ve got the ball. It’s a lot quicker so it’s a good type of footy to play at this time of the year,” Thurston said.

The Broncos opened their account by swatting aside last year’s NRL grand finalists Melbourne in a muscular 18-4 win.

Kiwi ace Jordan Kahu and Matt Gillett combined for three tries, while Josh Addo-Carr landed on the scoresheet moments after running down James Roberts.

In other results, Newcastle registered just their second competitive win in a year with a clinical 18-10 victory over the Wests Tigers.

South Sydney fell in the last moment to Canberra, who won 15-12, with centre Aaron Gray hobbling off injured in the first half.

The 22-year-old centre suffered a medial ligament injury and is unlikely to play in round one of the NRL.
