The season end of the NRL is approaching, and there’s still lots to sort out before the finals take place. The first game of round 20 is between North Queensland and Brisbane, taking place at 1300SMILES Stadium on Friday, 7.35pm. Martin Kennedy in strong Broncos link
Speculation is rife that Sydney Roosters prop Martin Kennedy is set to sign a three-year deal with NRL rivals Brisbane.
The Roosters released a statement on Thursday night that said the 24-year-old Queenslander was free to negotiate with other clubs for season 2014 and beyond “due to salary cap restraints”.
That development came after a number of Twitter posts stating Kennedy was expected to join the under-performing Broncos next year.
Kennedy is facing a tough battle to get on the field this season after being told he would miss up to 12 weeks with a knee injury suffered against Canterbury last month.
The highly-rated Kennedy was named as Queensland’s 18th man for the second State of Origin match this year.
The Broncos are looming as one of the more active clubs in the recruitment market given their below-par season in 2013.
They are reportedly chasing Melbourne Storm and Kangaroos captain Cameron Smith and have been linked with Bulldogs fullback Ben Barba.
Brisbane need to win six of their last seven games to keep their slim finals hopes alive, starting with Friday night’s clash with North Queensland in Townsville.
If unsuccessful, Brisbane will miss the finals for only the second time in 21 years.
