NSW’s Wighton told to prepare for anything

NSW utility Jack Wighton has been told by Blues coach Brad Fittler to be prepared for anything and everything in his State of Origin debut.

The Canberra five-eighth will wear the No.14 jersey on Wednesday night at Suncorp Stadium having unseated the out-of-form Tyrone Peachey.

During Blues training camp this week, the 26-year-old has floated around the backline, bobbing up all over the park.

“Just as 14, wherever he needs me, just do a job and try to make an impact,” Wighton said when asked about what his role would be.

“Anything. Origin is such a high-tempo game, you never know what’s going to come. He said be open-minded and be ready to go.”

Throughout his career, Wighton has started in every position in the backline for Canberra and had been picked by Fittler because of his versatility.

He is a natural fit if the Blues suffer an injury at fullback, wing or centre.

If all goes to plan, he will come on in a roving role, attempting to make an impact and exploit some tired Queensland forwards.

“I’ll just try to get an early touch, an early tackle and try to get into the game,” Wighton said.

“It’s one of the fastest games in the world so you’ve got to get in there before it’s over.”

The only position that he doesn’t offer cover for is dummy-half. It’s planned that Damien Cook will punch out 80 minutes and Cameron Murray is expected to slot in if there is an injury or if the South Sydney No.9 needs a spell.

However, Wighton – at 96kg and sturdy enough to play in the back row – said he wasn’t afraid to defend in the middle of the field if required.

He moved this year from fullback to five-eighth, defending in the front line, and said the experience had given him confidence.

“I’m getting my body in the middle now,” Wighton said.

“It might be a bit different but I’m confident I can do the job.”
