NSW back-rower Ben Creagh says victory over Queensland in Wednesday’s State of Origin decider would mean as much to him as St George Illawarra’s NRL premiership.
Creagh, who will make his 11th appearance for the Blues at Suncorp Stadium, was a key player in helping the Dragons secure a first premiership as a joint-venture in 2010.
And with NSW on the brink of winning a first Origin series since 2005, the 27-year-old said ending the dominance of this mighty Maroons side would be one of the finest moments of his career.
“It would be massive to be part of a team that wins a series,” Creagh said.
“It would be up there with winning the premiership.
“I’ve been a part of the last few series and it’s been heartbreaking to lose them. There’s a long way to go before we can talk about winning yet, and we still have a lot of work to do before we can talk about doing that.”
Asked if the loss of Billy Slater would weaken the Maroons, Creagh said it would be hard to argue that it wouldn’t, but the threat of an in-form Greg Inglis in the No.1 shirt is cause for concern.
“He’s the best fullback in the world so I couldn’t say no (it won’t), but the bloke who is filling his shoes is playing great,” Creagh said.
“They are still going to be a tough team on Wednesday night, the side they are putting out will be a massive test for us.
“The experienced players they have will ensure they won’t be affected too much by the changes.”
