NSW stay low-key for Origin opener

NSW will continue to adopt a low-key approach to Wednesday night’s State of Origin series opener against Queensland at Suncorp Stadium.

Desperate to avoid the hype of pre-match favouritism, Blues coach Laurie Daley opted against a guest speaker or jersey presentation at dinner on Tuesday night in a bid to keep players calm ahead of the blockbuster.

“Laurie is relaxed, the boys are relaxed and that tends to go through the group,” assistant coach John Cartwright said.

“A lot of the guys have played Origin, they’ve played grand finals and big games. We just try and encourage them to prepare the way they normally would.

“The best thing we can do is win the game, it’s not about hating or wanting to hurt.”

The Blues travelled to Brisbane on Tuesday following a light captain’s run on the Gold Coast, after their week-long camp south of the border in Kingscliff.

Cartwright said that had helped them avoid much of the debate surrounding Queensland’s team selection, including the absence of Billy Slater and Johnathan Thurston.

“It’s pretty much been 95 per cent about us,” Cartwright said.

“We’re not focused on who can play for them, who is out for them.

“Historically if you’re playing against Queensland you’re playing against that Maroon jumper and whoever comes in, they know the role they have to do and the history behind the game.”

“We don’t need any motivation, we only need to look at results over the past 10 years.”

Cartwright also said he had no concerns over how debutant Jake Trbojevic, who he coaches as an assistant at Manly, would handle the pressure at Suncorp.

“He won’t change,” Cartwright said.

“Jake’s a real pro. He will be nervous as everyone will be. But he’s a very relaxed sort of guy.

“He keeps things very simple, he knows his role when he gets out there. He runs hard, tackles hard, that’s what we need.”
