NRL Titans confident of Copley playing

Gold Coast Titans coach Neil Henry says he can’t see a reason why their bid to use new recruit Dale Copley in Friday night’s NRL clash against Parramatta will fail.

The injury-ravaged Titans will know on Thursday whether the NRL has granted them a special exemption to inject the former Sydney Roosters centre into their home clash.

Copley was granted an immediate release by the Roosters on Wednesday, 24 hours after Henry had to submit his 21-strong squad for the Eels clash.

Henry was confident the Titans would be granted permission to use Copley on their right edge, especially with English centre Dan Sarginson (knee) in serious doubt.

Winger and ex-skipper William Zillman appears to have overcome a calf complaint.

“Today at some time hopefully we will know (about Copley),” Henry said.

“We have to have a contingency plan if they knock him back but I can’t really see a reason (why they would).

“We couldn’t name him in the 21 because we weren’t sure he would come – that was out of our hands.”

Copley trained with the Titans on Thursday.

Henry said Copley’s injection into the Titans’ backline could not come soon enough.

The Gold Coast have 12 players either injured or unavailable ahead of their daunting clash with the rampant ladder leaders.

“We are really depleted in the outside backs,” Henry said.

“And he (Copley) is a regular first grader, from up this way and a big body.

“He’s had bad luck with injuries and I think his best footy is ahead of him.

“I see him as an asset out on that edge.”

The injury-plagued former Bronco signed with the Titans until the end of 2018 after falling out of favour at the Roosters.

“Hopefully he is eligible to play,” Titans co-captain Ryan James said.

“I have played here for a lot of years and we have never been this injury riddled.”

Injuries have also restricted Copley, playing just 86 first grade games since his 2009 debut with Brisbane.
