Preview:

SOUTH SYDNEY
For not the first time this year, the Rabbitohs let punters down when as short priced favourites, they trialled the Storm from the outset and were defeated 27 – 14 in round 11.

Quite remarkably, it was their fourth straight loss from five matches at ANZ Stadium this year, and they’ve started favourites each time.

They redeemed themselves to a certain degree last Monday night with an 18 – 0 victory over the struggling Sharks at Remondis Stadium.

The Rabbitohs had the better of almost aspect of the game but the points still did not come easy against a committed Sharks outfit and by half-time, the Rabbitohs had only managed the one try to lead 6 – 0.

It was the Rabbitohs sixth win of the season and their fifth by a margin of 13 + or more.

The Rabbitohs three representatives in Wednesday night’s game have all be named in the starting line-up for this match.

Hooker Isaac Luke, who has been out for several weeks with a shoulder injury, is an outside chance of making his return and will have an immediate impact if he starts.

DRAGONS
After falling to their third straight loss, and their sixth from their last seven games, against Parramatta in Round 10 36 – nil, Dragons Coach Steve Price was shown the door this week by the Dragons board with Paul McGregor called into the position for the remainder of the year.

The loss to Parramatta meant that from their past three games, the Dragons have only produced a combined total of 20 points whilst they have conceded 108 or an average of 36 points.

The return to the NRL of Benji Marshall did little to spark the Dragon offence and with another significant change to the team structure this week, it’ll take Marshall and the Dragons some weeks before they get back to any sort of form.

McGregor has wasted no time making changes to his side with Peter Mata’utia starting in the centres, Dan Hunt and Ben Creagh will start as props and Leeson Ah Mau falls back to the second row.

HEAD TO HEAD
The Rabbitohs have won four of the last five against the Dragons, all by margins of 13+ and given the current record of both sides, that trend looks to continue here.

The Dragons are basically starting from scratch, never a good thing almost half-way through a season, whilst Souths will field a strong and settled side with a forward pack that should dominate proceedings.

We’ve said it before and they’ve let us down, but South Sydney should win this one comfortably.

News:

Queensland selectors are set to contemplate a significant reshuffle for Origin II while giving their battered stars until the last minute to prove their fitness for the Sydney clash.

With their quest for nine straight State of Origin titles shaky, Maroons selectors boss Des Morris admitted the injury news in the wake of Wednesday night’s 12-8 opening-game loss to NSW meant the Queensland camp face a nervous wait over the next two weeks.

Famous for their loyalty amid an unprecedented dynasty, selectors will be sweating on the injury assessments of skipper Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk ahead of the June 18 rematch.

Morris said the line-up may remain a mystery as Smith faces one to two weeks out with a low-grade right ankle sprain and fullback Slater three weeks with a grade-two AC joint sprain to his right shoulder.

“We just have to see who is going to be available. We may have to wait a couple of weeks,” Morris told AAP.

He was already reeling from news that halfback Cronk (broken arm) would be out for up to three months after lasting just 10 minutes on Wednesday night.

At least there was some relief when the man who will attempt to fill Cronk’s shoes in Origin II, Manly playmaker Daly Cherry-Evans, downplayed his injury concerns.

Cherry-Evans was seen on crutches at the team hotel on Thursday nursing a tender hip and a heavily strapped left knee.

“I was a bit worried about it. It just needed a night to settle so I’m hoping it’s alright,” Cherry-Evans told reporters.

Still, a major Origin II overhaul looms for the reigning eight-time champions.

Broncos backrower Sam Thaiday (calf) should return, ensuring some nervous moments for out-of-sorts incumbents Chris McQueen and Josh Papalii.

Brisbane prop Josh McGuire and Gold Coast Titans giant David Taylor may also be called upon to add some punch off the bench.

Canberra fullback cum pivot Anthony Milford may be seen as either a bench utility option or even a replacement for Slater depending on the Test No.1′s recovery.

Sydney Roosters No.9 Jake Friend has already been earmarked as Smith’s understudy after being Queensland’s 19th man for game one.

Veteran Brent Tate backed Queensland’s depth to help turn the tables on the Blues.

“We have had to deal with this before – we just have to knuckle down,” Tate said.

“We have always spoken about our depth and we back the young guys coming through the (Emerging Origin) academy.”
